Today sees the close of the Thirty-ninth Meeting of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR).
Due to the exceptional circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Commission conducted its Thirty-ninth Meeting online from 27 to 30 October 2020. The Commission meeting was preceded by an online meeting of the Scientific Committee on 26 October. The meeting was attended by CCAMLR Members and Observers. The Commission meeting was chaired by Ambassador Fernando Curcio Ruigómez (Spain), and the Scientific Committee meeting by Dr Dirk Welsford (Australia).
Many important issues were discussed. Of particular note:

The Commission agreed precautionary catch limits for all toothfish fisheries in the Convention Area.

The Commission noted that the Scientific Committee has made significant progress towards a new approach to managing the krill fishery.

One vessel was added to the Contracting Party IUU-Vessel List.

The Commission approved two projects for funding under its new General Capacity Building Fund.
- The Commission also discussed climate change and Marine Protected Areas.
What is CCAMLR?
- The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources
- Established by an international treaty in 1982
- Its objective is the conservation of Antarctic marine life while providing for rational use
- 26 Members and a further 10 countries have signed the Convention
