In 2001, WG-FSA identified the difficulties that arose when new quantitative methodologies are introduced and incorporated into assessments undertaken during the time of a single meeting. As a result, the WG-FSA Subgroup on Assessment Methods (WG-FSA-SAM) was established in order to provide an opportunity to provide time for a thorough evaluation of new assessment methods prior to their use at WG-FSA.
At its second meeting, in 1983, the Scientific Committee agreed that the starting point for discussions on fish stock assessment should be to consider the report of the second meeting of the BIOMASS Working Party on Antarctic Fish Biology (BIOMASS Report Series 12) during its meeting in 1984. Accordingly, in 1984, based on the findings of the BIOMASS report and other information on the status of fish stocks in the Antarctic, the Scientific Committee agreed to the following terms of reference for the ad hoc Working Group on Fish Stock Assessment:
WG-EMM first met in 1995 after the amalgamation of the Working Group on Krill (WG-Krill) and the Working Group on CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Program (WG-CEMP). The establishing terms of reference requested the group to:
(i) Assess status of krill.
(ii) Assess status and trends of dependent and related populations including identification of information required to evaluate predator/prey/fisheries interactions and their relationships to environmental features.
